Checkpoints are primary elements at VVVVVV. When the player passes through them, they "activate" the checkpoint, which will respawn the player when they die, they can also be a intelligent enemy, as it can prevent the player from further attempts to a trinket or dialogue.
- In earlier versions of the game, Checkpoints were strange, crystal-shaped icons with a S in the middle, this has been changed to the circular shaped one with C in the middle we all know.
- A strange checkpoint box shaped will determine your respawn direction based on the lastest checkpoint. This is rarely seen in maps, however, it is possible.
- Rollercoasting is a challenge that makes the player pass through various screens without checkpoints or pauses (by touching the ground). A good and famous example of rollercoasting is the trinket present in Doing Things the Hard Way.
