Checkpoints are primary elements at VVVVVV. When the player passes through them, they "activate" the checkpoint, which will respawn the player when they die, they can also be an intelligent enemy, as it can prevent the player from further attempts to a trinket or dialogue.
- In earlier versions of the game, Checkpoints were strange, crystal-shaped icons with a S in the middle, this has been changed to the circular shaped one with C in the middle we all know.
- A strange box-shaped checkpoint will determine your respawn direction based on the lastest checkpoint. This is rarely seen in maps, however, it is possible.
- Rollercoasting is a challenge that makes the player pass through various screens without checkpoints or pauses (by touching the ground). A good and famous example of rollercoasting is the trinket present in Doing Things the Hard Way.
